Se glielo chiedessero, Hiram Larew vi direbbe sicuramente che non scrive poesie tanto per rispondere alle domande. Piuttosto, lui è innamorato delle domande stesse e dà loro la possibilità di stare in piedi da sole, pur assumendo molte pose diverse nella sua opera. Tutto questo ha senso perché quando il lettore arriva all’ultimo verso della sua poesia e sorride, o si sofferma per un secondo dopo o addirittura vuole rileggere o condividere una frase, allora il lettore è incoraggiato a formulare le proprie domande. Questo è ciò che Larew si propone di fare con la sua arte che ha affinato in modo così meticoloso e meraviglioso. Hiram sostiene che nelle sue poesie non ci sono molte storie da prima pagina o lezioni di vita, ma più che altro segnali di strada nella nebbia. Ciò che diventa presto evidente, però, è che spesso il sentiero non così chiaramente segnato ci offre maggiori opportunità di scoperta di noi stessi rispetto a quello assoluto. When asked Hiram Larew would surely tell you that he doesn’t write poetry so much to answer questions. Rather, he is in love with the questions themselves and gives them the agency to stand alone while still taking on many different poses in his work. This all makes sense because when the reader arrives to the last line in his poem and smiles, or pauses for a second afterwards or even wants to re-read or share a phrase, then the reader is encouraged to formulate his own questions. This is what Larew sets out to accomplish with this craft that he has so meticulously and beautifully honed. Hiram claims that there aren’t many headline stories or life lessons in his poetry, more up-ahead-road-signs-in-the-fog. What soon becomes evident, though, is that so often the path that is not as clearly marked gives us more opportunity for self-discovery than the absolute.
